Local One, IBEW, represents more than 6,200 members employed at electrical contractors, communication contractors, sign erection contractors, maintenance firms, electrical manufacturing plants, fixture companies, motor repair shops, electrical supply houses, alarm and security companies, appliance repair firms, automatic door installation companies, two-way radio and mobile phone companies, lightning rod installation firms and panel fabrication plants. Our proud history dates to 1891 when Local One became our International Union's first organized local union. Our roots as an early leader continue today: Leader in Education - Local One has a strong history in education, providing the training needed for Local One members to meet the present and future needs of our ever-changing industry. In cooperation with our signatory contractors, we support one of the finest Electrical Industry Training Centers in the nation. Classroom instruction is provided to three classifications of apprentices, inside construction, residential, and communication. The center also provides journeyman-level instruction in the latest technology to over 700 members attending night school.
Leader in Political Action - Four members of Local One serve as Missouri State Representatives. Local One is represented on the St. Louis City Board of Aldermen. A Local One member serves the City of St. Louis as the Zoning Commissioner. The Local is also represented throughout our jurisdiction by members serving on City and County school boards, fire district boards, ambulance boards, and convention center boards. These members take an active role as advocates of the labor movement. We strive to keep our members informed of important political activity on the local, state, and federal levels.
Leader in the Community - Local One is actively involved in community service programs. Our members readily volunteer their time and apply their expertise and training on important community projects such as National Night Out. Once a year, all houses in selected neighborhoods are retro-fitted with new porch lighting and automation security lighting, with all materials donated by our signatory contractors. IBEW, Local One's leadership in education, political action, and community service has established us as a leader in the labor movement. Our continued commitment to these endeavors will ensure Local One plays a vital role in the development of the economy and vitality in the communities where we live and work.
